UMO is recruiting an experienced, student-centred assistive technology trainer to help disabled and neurodivergent students use approved software and equipment confidently and independently at a specialist university in London.
About the assistive technology trainer role
You will provide a tailored, time-limited programme of practical training that helps students use specialist software or hardware awarded or approved for their studies. Training is commonly provided during the initial stages of a course or when new technology is introduced.
Sessions may cover assistive software and equipment, accessibility settings, operating-system integration, guided practice, effective study workflows and strategies for using technology independently.
Hours will vary according to student referrals, timetables and support demand. The role may involve travel between university campuses in London.
What you will do
- Deliver clear, accessible assistive technology training in person and, where agreed, online.
- Tailor sessions to the student’s approved technology, access requirements and course activities.
- Explain how assistive technology interacts with the student’s operating system, other software and established study workflows.
- Demonstrate features and workflows through guided practice rather than completing tasks for the student.
- Help students build confidence and develop sustainable ways to use their technology independently.
- Plan and review training around agreed goals, recording progress and next steps accurately.
- Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality and secure administrative records.
- Communicate promptly with UMO about access problems, equipment issues or changes affecting support.
About you
- Demonstrable experience delivering assistive technology training to disabled or neurodivergent learners, ideally in higher education.
- Thorough, current knowledge of assistive software and hardware used in DSA-funded support.
- Strong working knowledge of how assistive technologies interact with Windows, macOS, mainstream applications and other specialist software.
- Understanding of learning requirements in higher education and how assistive technology can address disability-related barriers to study.
- Ability to explain technical features clearly, patiently and without unnecessary jargon.
- A flexible, student-led approach that responds to different access requirements and learning preferences.
- Excellent organisation, communication and record-keeping skills.
- Reliable and able to travel to different university campuses across London.
- A professional, discreet approach to confidential and disability-related information.
- Commitment to disability equity, inclusive education and independent technology use.
The current Department for Education requirements do not prescribe a specific qualification for DSA assistive technology training. Relevant training qualifications or manufacturer certifications are welcome, but applicants must be able to demonstrate thorough, up-to-date assistive technology knowledge and effective training practice.

Role boundaries
Assistive technology training helps students learn to use approved software or equipment. The trainer is not expected to repair devices, provide technical support for every product, replace a supplier’s warranty or helpdesk, or complete academic work for a student.
