Workplace coaching for employees

Coaching that helps an employee clarify their personal and professional goals and work towards them. It is a structured but creative process built on what is already working, rather than on what has gone wrong.

Work Coaching

Meeting potential

Coaching supports employees with their personal and professional goals, focusing on what works for them and empowering positive change.

Confidence and productivity

Sessions help individuals define what they are working towards, so they can be confident, productive members of the workforce.

Solutions that fit

Guided conversations help people draw on their own creativity and resourcefulness, so the strategies suit their actual circumstances.

What coaching does

Amplify what is already working

A key benefit of coaching is its focus on what is going well. Recognising successes and building on them gives people confidence and momentum, and coaching then addresses the obstacles head-on.

  • Explore strengths and identify challenges
  • Develop strategies for meaningful progress
  • Reflect deeply, then act practically
  • Overcome the obstacles hindering growth
  • Navigate complex environments and take new opportunities

How workplace coaching works

A structured process that ends with the employee holding the plan.

01

Clarify the goals

The employee sets out what they want to achieve, personally and professionally.

02

Find what works

Coaching starts from strengths and successes, recognising them and building on them.

03

Address the obstacles

Together they identify what is hindering growth and develop strategies to work past it.

04

Act and sustain

Deep reflection turns into practical action, aimed at change that lasts beyond the sessions.

Coaching or mentoring?

Coaching starts from what is working; mentoring starts from what is in the way

Coaching is goal-focused and forward-looking, for an employee who wants to progress. It is not therapy, and it does not require a condition or a diagnosis.

Where an employee is managing a mental health condition or a neurodiverse condition at work, specialist mentoring is the better fit. UMO offers both, and will say which one suits the situation.

What coaching works on

The focus is individual, and changes with the employee’s career stage and priorities.

Clarity

Defining personal and professional goals clearly enough to work towards them.

Strengths

Exploring what an employee already does well, and building deliberately on it.

Resilience

Handling complex environments and the pressures that come with them.

Momentum

Turning recognised successes into confidence and forward movement.

Purpose

A renewed sense of direction, and genuine professional fulfilment.

Practical action

Reflection that ends in something the employee actually does differently.

Delivery, format and employer responsibilities

Coaching sits alongside an employer’s own development provision rather than replacing it.

Qualified coaches

UMO added coaching alongside its mentoring services in response to growing demand, delivered by qualified practitioners.

Individual or group

Both formats are available, for a single employee or for a team or peer group.

Employer duties continue

Coaching does not replace reasonable adjustments, occupational health or an employer’s own performance and development processes.

Questions about coaching

Answers for employers, HR teams and the employees taking part.

The service

Who is coaching for?

Any employee wanting to clarify and work towards personal or professional goals. No condition or diagnosis is needed.

Individual or group?

Both. One-to-one coaching suits an individual’s goals; group coaching suits a team or peer group working on shared ground.

What happens in a session?

Guided conversation: exploring strengths, identifying challenges and developing strategies, with reflection turning into practical action.

How many sessions are needed?

It depends on the goals. Contact UMO to discuss what would suit the employee and the role.

Cost and fit

What does it cost?

£80 excluding VAT for individual coaching and £150 excluding VAT for group coaching, invoiced to the employer.

How is this different from mentoring?

Coaching is goal-focused and starts from what is working. Specialist mentoring supports an employee managing a mental health or neurodiverse condition at work.

Is it confidential?

Yes, within UMO’s safeguarding procedures. Coaching is not a channel for reporting back to a manager.

Can Access to Work fund it?

Access to Work funds workplace support for eligible employees. See UMO’s Access to Work page for how that route works.

Arrange coaching for your team
