Notetakers and Specialist Notetakers – London

UMO is recruiting general notetakers and qualified specialist notetakers to support disabled and neurodivergent students at a specialist university in London. Opportunities include university-funded general notetaking and specialist notetaking for Deaf, hard-of-hearing and visually impaired students. We particularly welcome applicants who can cover several of these notetaking routes.

Start dateSeptember 2026

About the notetaking roles

You will attend agreed lectures, seminars and other taught sessions and produce clear, well-structured notes in the student’s agreed format. Your work will help students focus on listening, processing information, discussion and participation without having to create a complete written record at the same time.

Support may be delivered online or in person according to the referral, teaching arrangements and student’s access requirements. Hours will vary according to student timetables and demand, and in-person work may involve travel between university campuses in London.

What you will do

  • Attend agreed teaching sessions punctually online or in person.
  • Capture key ideas, relevant detail, terminology, examples and instructions accurately.
  • Produce organised digital notes using clear headings, spacing and consistent structure.
  • Adapt the presentation of notes to the student’s agreed accessibility preferences.
  • Share completed notes promptly through the agreed secure route.
  • Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality and accurate administrative records.
  • Communicate promptly with UMO about timetable changes, access issues or cancelled sessions.

Who we are recruiting

You may apply under one or more of the following routes. We would ideally like practitioners who can cover most of the notetaking provision required by the university, including different student access requirements, teaching formats and delivery settings. Applicants with eligibility and experience across multiple routes are therefore particularly encouraged, although strong applicants specialising in one route are also welcome. UMO will verify qualifications and allocate practitioners only to roles for which they are eligible.

General notetakers

  • Excellent written English and the ability to identify and summarise essential information.
  • Fast, accurate typing and confidence producing well-formatted digital documents.
  • Strong listening, concentration, organisation and time-management skills.
  • Reliable and able to travel to different university campuses across London.
  • A professional, discreet approach to confidential and disability-related information.
  • Commitment to disability equity, inclusive education and student-led support.
  • Confidence working independently while following UMO procedures and role boundaries.

Specialist Notetaker – Deaf or hard of hearing (SN-D)

  • Hold a qualification or formally assessed equivalent training accepted for SN-D under the current Department for Education mandatory qualification requirements.
  • Be able to produce comprehensive, non-verbatim notes in the student’s preferred style and format using appropriate digital tools.

Specialist Notetaker – Vision Impairment (SN-VI)

  • Hold a qualification or formally assessed equivalent training accepted for SN-VI under the current Department for Education mandatory qualification requirements.
  • Be able to produce accessible documents with clear heading structures and, where required, interpret and describe visual information presented during teaching.

Specialist practitioners must have access to a suitable laptop and software for producing and securely sharing notes. Relevant qualifications and training will be checked before appointment.

What we offer

  • Competitive pay.
  • Flexible, term-time work shaped around university timetables.
  • Induction, guidance and support from UMO’s experienced team.
  • The opportunity to contribute to practical, person-centred access support in higher education.

Role boundaries

These notetaking roles do not include word-for-word transcription, speech-to-text reporting, respeaking, live captioning or subject tutoring. Notetakers do not complete academic work, decide what a student should learn or replace accessible teaching materials.

How to apply

Send your CV and a short covering message stating whether you are applying as a general notetaker, SN-D, SN-VI or under more than one route. Include your relevant experience, qualifications or assessed training, availability from September and ability to travel across London for in-person work. Applications are reviewed as they are received.
