Mental Health Support
Specialist Mentoring for PhDs is a specialised form of support for PhD students. It supports postgraduates studying for a PhD who may have a mental health, wellbeing or neurodiverse challenge which is impacting their studies.
Ongoing Sessions
The sessions focus on practical support helping students understand how their mental health, neurodiversity or wellbeing impacts their life, research and interactions with supervisors and fellow students.

What is Specialist Mental Health Mentoring for PhD?
UMO’s Specialist Mentors help a PhD student keep accountable to themselves. They are able help the postgraduate grapple the complexities and the unique environment that PhD students face, such as, imposter syndrome, loneliness and difficulties with supervisors. They provide support, help and understanding to ensure the PhD student is able to thrive and achieve their goals whilst undertaking their postgraduate studies.
UMO’s Specialist Mental Health Mentoring helps students recognise mental health barriers. The mentor helps them to understand their condition and supports them in developing strategies to address and even overcome it. Mentoring support is tailored to the specific needs of the student.
Mentoring has a positive impact on functioning, academic performance and experience at university.
What do Mentoring Sessions involve?
Sessions are designed to be adaptable to each individual, to provide consistent, ongoing support with practical strategies. Sessions are with an experienced and accredited mental health professional. Sessions are usually weekly for 30-60 minutes and be can be in-person or remote (online).
