For workplaces

Professional supervision for workplace staff

Supervision gives staff a supportive, confidential space to discuss the personal and emotional effect of their work. UMO provides it to managers, HR and people teams, occupational health and wellbeing practitioners, and anyone whose role involves complex, sensitive or emotionally demanding work.

Workplace Supervision

A space for the work’s effect

Somewhere to discuss the personal and emotional reactions the work produces, rather than carrying them into the next conversation, shift or meeting.

Reflection and challenge

Staff can reflect on and challenge their own practice in a safe, confidential environment away from the line management relationship, and receive feedback on their skills.

Professional development

Supervision supports development, helps identify developmental needs and provides evidence for revalidation or professional registration where that applies.

Who it is for

Staff whose roles carry emotional weight

UMO provides supervision across the workplace roles that hold difficult, sensitive or distressing material as an ordinary part of the job.

  • Line managers supporting employees through ill health, crisis or long-term absence
  • HR and people teams handling grievance, disciplinary and safeguarding matters
  • Occupational health and workplace wellbeing practitioners
  • Mental health first aiders and internal employee support volunteers
  • Staff in care, social work, housing, education and other frontline roles
  • In-house counselling, coaching and employee assistance staff

How supervision works

A regular, confidential arrangement agreed with the employer and held to.

01

Agree the arrangement

The employer and UMO confirm whether supervision is individual or group, how often it runs, and whether it is on site or remote.

02

Match the supervisor

Staff are matched with a highly qualified clinician experienced in supervision and in the demands of the role being supervised.

03

Regular sessions

Supervision runs fortnightly or monthly, on site or remotely through the secure platform agreed.

04

Reflect and develop

Staff reflect on practice, receive feedback, identify developmental needs and gather what professional registration or revalidation requires.

What supervision is for

Supervision protects the service, not only the individual

It gives an organisation a mechanism for keeping difficult work safe, considered and sustainable.

Staff who have somewhere to take the effect of the work, and someone to challenge their practice, make better decisions and stay well in post for longer. That is why supervision belongs in an organisation’s provision rather than being left to individuals to arrange.

Where workplace supervision makes the difference

Supervision is most valuable in roles where staff routinely absorb other people’s distress as part of doing the job well.

Managing ill health and absence

Supporting an employee through mental ill health, crisis or a long absence while holding the operational side of the role at the same time.

Grievance and investigation

Handling disclosures, complaints and disciplinary matters that carry personal detail and real consequence for the people involved.

Safeguarding and risk

Making judgements about risk to an employee or a member of the public, often at short notice and without complete information.

Frontline and public-facing work

Roles in care, housing, education and customer contact where distress and conflict are part of an ordinary day.

In-house wellbeing roles

Mental health first aiders, wellbeing leads and peer supporters who take on informal support alongside their own job.

Change, restructure and redundancy

Delivering difficult organisational decisions while remaining a point of support for the people those decisions affect.

Supervisors, format and delivery

What an employer is agreeing to when it commissions supervision.

Highly qualified supervisors

UMO’s supervisors are highly qualified clinicians with extensive experience in supervision, who understand the demands of the role and how to support professionals.

Individual or group

Supervision is provided one to one or to a team or peer group, whichever suits the organisation and the staff involved.

Separate from line management

Supervision sits outside the reporting line. It is not appraisal, performance management or a route for the employer to monitor individuals.

Questions about workplace supervision

Answers for HR, wellbeing leads and the staff being supervised.

The arrangement

Who is workplace supervision for?

Line managers, HR and people teams, occupational health and wellbeing practitioners, mental health first aiders, and staff in care, social work, housing, education and other frontline roles.

How often does supervision run?

Fortnightly or monthly, agreed with the employer.

Is it on site or remote?

Either. Remote supervision runs through a secure digital platform agreed with the employer.

Individual or group?

Both are available. Group supervision suits a team or peer group; individual supervision suits a single member of staff.

Confidentiality, supervisors and cost

Is supervision confidential?

Yes. Staff reflect on and challenge their own practice in a safe and confidential environment. Supervision is not a reporting channel back to the employer, and what is discussed is not fed back to managers.

Is supervision the same as line management or appraisal?

No. Supervision sits outside the reporting line. It is not performance management, appraisal or a route for the employer to monitor individuals.

Who provides the supervision?

Highly qualified clinicians with extensive experience in supervision, who understand the demands of the role being supervised.

What does it cost?

Individual supervision is £83 + VAT (£99.60 including VAT). Group supervision is £156 + VAT (£187.20 including VAT). Both are invoiced to the employer.

Does supervision support revalidation?

Yes. Staff can engage in professional development, identify developmental needs and support revalidation where that applies to their registration.
