Accessibility Statement

In short: we want everyone to be able to use this website, whatever their disability, condition or way of working. This page sets out what we have done, what we know is not right yet, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.

Our commitment

UMO exists to help people study and work to the best of their abilities. A website that excludes people would contradict the whole point of our work. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at Level AA (opens in a new tab).

What we have done

  • Rebuilt the colour palette so text and buttons meet the required contrast ratios. Our orange is now used as a surface behind dark text, rather than as text on white.
  • Restored a visible focus indicator on every link, button and form field, so the page can be used with a keyboard alone.
  • Given every partner and institution logo a proper text description.
  • Made our headline statistics show their real values immediately, rather than counting up from zero.
  • Increased the size of menu and footer links so they are easier to hit with a finger, a trackpad or an unsteady hand.
  • Limited the width of body text to a comfortable reading measure, and kept generous line spacing.
  • Honoured the “reduce motion” setting in your operating system or browser: if you have it on, animations on this site do not run.
  • Used a soft off-white rather than pure white behind long passages of text, which reduces glare for many readers.

What we know is not right yet

We would rather tell you than let you find out:

  • We have reviewed the homepage in detail. Service pages, the blog, OneSpace Passport and our forms have not yet had the same treatment.
  • We have not yet completed a full screen reader walkthrough with NVDA or VoiceOver.
  • We have not yet tested every page at narrow mobile widths.
  • Some links open in a new tab. We now announce this to screen reader users, but we have not yet reviewed whether each one needs to.
  • Some documents we link to, such as PDFs, may not be fully accessible.

Tell us when something does not work

If any part of this site gets in your way, or you need something we publish in a different format, please contact us. You do not need to explain why, and you do not need to use any particular words.

We aim to reply within five working days.

Enforcement

If you contact us about an accessibility problem and are not happy with our response, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS) (opens in a new tab).
